One day after reading a story about someone who was criticized for not being green I thought of times gone by of being naturally green. Instead of “green solutions,” we walked to the store, recycled glass bottles, hung our laundry in the sun, and used water fountains instead of consumable plastic bottles, and so on.
Now we have “eco friendly bags” for a “green solution” to plastic bags. But what happens to all that plastic? What do you do with your plastic bags? Are they gathering in your cupboard? Do they go into another plastic bag in your garbage? We are learning about how all this plastic is affecting our planet, going into landfills, yet they are so convenient. We can make a difference using a canvas tote to reuse and avoid bringing home more plastic.
An eco friendly bag is a bag that can be used over and over. But aside from using a specific bag for a green solution to shopping, we can be more aware of the packing at the checkout. At the supermarket, I make them mix it up a little, go ahead, stick the bag of rice in with the veggies, that box of toothpaste can go in with the cans; why do they pack every item according to its position in the kitchen? NOT necessary!

And when buying just a few things, just throw them into your large canvas tote. Our hand painted large canvas totes are beautiful bags for everyday use. When it’s time to pick up a few things – not messy drippy stuff, but maybe that tube of toothpaste, a loaf of bread or some vegetables you can just throw it in the tote, no? It’s not just the bag that is eco friendly it’s the user of the bag; it’s the consciousness of saying, “Hey, I could do with one less plastic bag!”
Of course you could have lots of different eco friendly canvas bags in the car ready for shopping, but how many times do you remember them just as you reach the checkout counter? Place your few purchased items in a big tote it goes and voila! Your hand painted canvas tote has now converted into an eco friendly bag for a green solution. Good job!

Maybe you like to hang your clothes in the sun, but you don’t have a clothesline, and you want that plastic bottle of water when you walk out the door. (Maybe refill those plastic bottles with water from your home?) And when it’s time to do a big shop for the family it’s easier to remember take along your canvas totes because you are on a shopping mission.
There was a time when we didn’t think of green solutions for the planet, life was just a “greener” way to live. But we need to implement green solutions everyday, and because shopping is a big part of our lives, using canvas totes and bags is a great place to start.
